The EuMHA Manchester MHealth Ecosystem

The EuMHA Manchester MHealth ecosystem brings together health and community care providers, a world-class research university, local government, major international companies and MHealth SMEs in a permanent partnership. The ecosystem serves a diverse population of 2.5M within a 10 mile radius of the centre of the UK’s second city, delivering services to > 2 million patients p.a.

The partners share a vision of health and social care, transformed by mobile technology and recognise the need for concerted action to move MHealth into the mainstream.  At the core of the ecosystem is Manchester Academic Health Sciences Centre an existing partnership between the University of Manchester and the NHS comprising 8 Hospitals with 3,700 beds and ~ 23,500 NHS staff , plus primary, community and social care covering the full spectrum of healthcare: acute, specialist, mental health, primary care, and commissioning; a major clinical research network; industry partners include Intel, Janssen Healthcare Innovation (a division of Johnson and Johnson), and Bosch Healthcare as well as a number of SMEs.

The ecosystem partners have worked together to identified key priorities for ecosystem projects (driven by clinical need and commercial interest) in the hospital, community and home settings. The initial projects will focus on real-time access to patient information at the point of care, and social networking support for older people and those with long term conditions. EuMHA the European MHealth Alliance www.eumha.com is also planning additional MHealth Ecosystems, initially in Finland and Catalonia, Spain. This international network of MHealth Ecosytems will have Manchester as its Flagship and will enable all EuMHA members to participate and contribute to the shared vision.
